Eintritt: Agathe de Bailliencourt’s first solo exhibition in Canada

April 20 – May 18, reception Sat. April 20 from 4-7 pm

General Hardware Contemporary is pleased to present Eintritt, Agathe de Bailliencourt’s first solo exhibition in Canada. Agathe de Bailliencourt (b. 1974, Paris) is a painter working on canvas, paper, in public space and architecture.

Eintritt marks the latest evolution in de Bailliencourt’s series “Je m’en fous”. At first glance, the paintings allude to architectural structures – sketched spaces within the frame of the canvas. Her gestural strokes attempt to go beyond the frame. In combination with a bright chromaticity, this leads to an abstract environment of contradicting architectural perspectives.

De Bailliencourt’s Eintritt series transgresses the limits of both abstraction and figuration with a profoundly personal dimension, somewhere beyond categories of “inside” and “outside”, a radical quest for emotional transparency and sincerity in the way of Sophie Calle.

Agathe attended the Ecole de Beaux-Arts in Cergy Pontoise and the Ecole Boulle, Paris. Since 2004, de Bailliencourt has been exhibiting internationally; in 2006 Agathe participated in the Singapore Biennale with a site-specific painting installation. In 2009, she was invited by Mori Art Museum in Tokyo to take part in the Roppongi Art Night and then later that year returned to Japan for the Tokyo Wonder Site Residency. Among her permanent public installations is the French Embassy in Tokyo. Most recently, de Bailliencourt took part in the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council’s workspace program and the Art Omi residency in Ghent, New York. The artist currently lives and works in Berlin, Germany.

Agathe de Bailliencourt’s exhibition will coincide with her NYC solo exhibition at Benrimon Contemporary in May.

“Despite Territories” a 64-page full color book of Agathe de Bailliencourt’s public installations and paintings is available at General Hardware Contemporary. Published by Revolver Publishing, Berlin.

What wonderful carefree work – but wait is it so carefree? Ravishing colour, bold and unafraid,
Thank you for these.
